If you’re in the market for a mid-size three-row crossover SUV, then chances are you’re considering both the Telluride from Kia and the Pathfinder from Nissan. The Telluride is one of the most celebrated vehicles in its class, including winning the 2020 MotorTrend SUV of the Year. But the 2020 Nissan Pathfinder is no slouch and delivers a rather compelling base package at a competitive price. With all this in mind, your local Kia experts at 401 Dixie Kia serving Mississauga Toronto Ontario present to you our 2020 Kia Telluride vs. 2020 Nissan Pathfinder comparison.
Exterior – 2020 Kia Telluride
The standard Telluride exterior boasts 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, automatic headlamps and rear parking sensors. The up-level S upgrades the wheels to 20 inches and adds roof rails and a sunroof. The EX adds a hands-free liftgate and power-folding side mirrors and upgrades some of the lighting to LED. The range-topping SX upgrades all of the lighting to LED and adds fog lamps in addition to dual sunroofs, front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. Nissan offers a similar arrangement, but a sunroof is not added until the Platinum trim level, and roof rails have to be added separately at all trim levels unless you opt for the special Rock Creek Edition Pathfinder.
Interior – 2020 Kia Telluride in Mississauga ON
Two big reasons consumers opt for mid-size three-row SUVs over smaller crossovers is passenger capacity and cargo volume. Both can seat up to eight, but seven is the usual configuration, and legroom and headroom are comparable. When it comes to cargo volume, the Telluride is a clear winner not just versus the Pathfinder but the class in general. Kia offers 21 cubic feet behind the third row, 46 with the third row folded and 87 with the second row folded as well. Nissan offers 16.2, 47.4 and 79.5 cubic feet. While there is a bit more room there with the third row folded, the core cargo area is noticeably smaller.
Mechanical – Telluride specs in Mississauga
Both the Telluride and Pathfinder are front-wheel drive standard but offer all-wheel drive as an option at all trim levels. Another similarity between the vehicles is that both feature a single powertrain throughout the lineup, but the Kia engine is a bit beefier. Kia mates a 3.8-liter V6 to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the engine is rated for 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Nissan, on the other hand, mates a 3.5-liter V6 to a continuously variable automatic transmission, and the engine is rated for 284 hp and 259 lb.-ft. A towing package is available in both cases, and while the Pathfinder can tow a bit more—up to 6,000 pounds compared to 5,000—drivers will enjoy the self-leveling suspension that Kia includes in the tow package at the EX and SX trim levels.
Technology – Telluride specs in Mississauga ON
The 2020 Kia Telluride features an 8.0-inch color HD touchscreen. The multimedia setup includes five USB charging ports, Bluetooth capabilities, Apple and Android integration, a rearview camera and a six-speaker sound setup with satellite radio. Nissan offers a similar infotainment package, but there are some notable differences, such as one less USB port and a lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Android and Apple support are now seen as must-haves in the auto world, and the omission here is odd. Another advantage with the Telluride is that the base driver assistance group is more robust. It includes blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and more. The base Pathfinder package only has automatic emergency braking, and you have to move up trim levels to get the others.
Standard Equipment – 2020 Kia Telluride dealer
The Kia approach to standard equipment is a big reason why the automaker has been so successful in recent decades. Unsurprisingly, the 2020 Kia Telluride boasts one of the more expansive standard equipment packages in the segment. This includes a state-of-the-art infotainment system and the Kia Drive Wise driver assistance technologies. Nissan has adjusted its trim levels for this model year so that the packages are more attractive at the lower trim levels. However, the base Pathfinder S is a bit light equipment-wise for the segment in general, and you really have to step up to the up-level SV—and incur that additional cost—before you get an equipment package comparable to the base Telluride.
