It’s the battle of midsize SUVs between the 2021 Kia Sorento and the 2020 Nissan Pathfinder. While the Nissan Pathfinder is taking 2021 off to focus on their upcoming 2022 model, the 2021 Sorento vs. 2020 Pathfinder still presents a more than fair comparison between these closely matched vehicles. Explore below as we pit them against each other in vehicle design, interior comfort and spaciousness, performance and safety. Before you look at purchasing either of these capable options, take a look through our comparison below and see which one deserves your time and money at 401 Dixie Kia!
The Sorento has been refreshed consistently throughout the last few years, creating a look that is stylish but makes no secret of the capable performance it’s able to accomplish. It does so from its chrome grille, through a smooth hood that begins the aerodynamic yet rugged styling of the Sorento, from front to the rear. Blending modern city-style with off-road ability easily showcases its ability to transition from urban to city.
The Pathfinder may present a bit bigger of an SUV than the Sorento, as it leans more toward the off-road utility side of things rather than the Sorento that straddles the line and can do it all. Like the Sorento, the Pathfinder mixes in both modern stylistic elements with a refined grille and bumper, but with its rugged looks that tip it toward off-road utility.

Interior size across both vehicles is incredibly similar, so a lot of the difference comes down to the feature available. Relax in the Sorento through any season thanks to the heated steering wheel and heated/ventilated front seats. Comfort isn’t only bred through the materials inside the lush Sorento, but also through its advanced and connective tech. Easily connect your phone through the display screen with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and keep it charged through the wireless capability. A Bose Premium Audio system joins to provide crystal clear sound.
The Pathfinder presents its own comfortable and enjoyable features through leather-appointed seats, a wood-tone trim and chrome accents that help provide some contrast. Its tech matches up with Bluetooth audio, a control panel and touchscreen, Intelligent key and its own Bose audio system. While the interior is focused on to look aesthetically pleasing, the tech options are a bit lackluster to stand-up to its design touches.

The top engine of the Sorento puts it firmly against the Pathfinder. While it may be a tick below in horsepower, it more than makes up for that difference in the torque ability. Not only that, but it stays more efficient as well, on both the city and highway. Of course, fit for any Mississauga season is all-wheel drive functionality, providing more than enough traction for your Sorento to tackle even the most adverse situations.
While the Pathfinder presents some dynamic performance, it’s either only slightly ahead in horsepower, or lacking in both torque and efficiency. It does present the better towing capacity of 6,000 lbs, but is truly dependent on if that’s what you’re after out of your SUV. An intelligent 4×4 system gives it its own ability to tackle roads year-round.

Safety is of prime importance for the Sorento, with a few highlighted systems that showcase its commitment to the safety of those in the vehicle and out. Advanced Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning Function supplies an alert if there’s an incoming vehicle when you’re at a junction. Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist keeps an eye out for those vehicles that slip into your blind spot, helping to intervene if needed to avoid collisions.
The Pathfinder is built around the signature Nissan Intelligent Mobility system, with its full Nissan suite of safety technology. Highlighted among it is standard Intelligent Emergency Braking, an Intelligent Around View Monitor and Blind Spot Warning. More advanced functionality is seen through Vehicle Dynamic Control, Brake Assist and a Rear Door Alert.
The 2021 Kia Sorento starts at $33,995, while the 2020 Nissan Pathfinder starts at $36,698. Our verdict as to which one is better is dependent on what you desire out of your vehicle. If you’re just interested in only off-roading, the Pathfinder is a fine enough option, but if you want to do it all, from city commuting to off-road adventuring, crossing seamlessly between the two in a vehicle that’s stylish for the urban crowd and rugged for the rural sector, then the Sorento is the prime choice. The Sorento is the Kia option that does it all, and even does so coming in at a lesser price!
